The airport is set some 8 miles (13 km) outside the town of Liberia and 134 miles northwest (217 km) of San José. It receives daily flights from places throughout Costa Rica and the rest of the world. Outside of domestic flights, the most frequent connections are between the US and Canada, although there are arrivals from Europe and South America as well.
From the Liberia International Airport you can hop on a quick domestic flight to Tamarindo, Samara or Punta Islita. Buses, taxis, car rentals and private transportation are readily available; please see our Ground transportation page for additional details. It is a full service airport that’s equipped with fueling services, paramedical services, technical services, a fire department, and luggage handling. There is also a bank, a snack bar, and medical assistance on hand.
Liberia’s airport is named after Daniel Oduber Quirós, who served as the country’s president from 1974 to 1978. Oduber Quirós was monumental in building up the province’s infrastructure and helped to get this airport re-inaugurated as an international airport in 1995.

Procedures And Requirements
Passports
The Costa Rican Passports issued after September 2006 have a validity of 6 years. The minimum validity of a Costa Rican passport to travel to another country is established by the migration authorities of the country you are going to visit.
Visa
Depending of your origin country a visa might be requested. Besides the visa, in order to visit Costa Rica people must meet the following requirements:

Travel continuity ticket or return to the country of origin.

Proof of of economic solvency, which corresponds to US $ 100.00 for each month of tourism.

Passport in good condition. The minimum validity of the passport will correspond to the group in which the foreign person is located, according to the Guideline of Income to Costa Rica

For nationals located in the First Group, up to 1 day.

For nationals located in the Second Group, mandatory validity of 3 months.
-
For nationals of the Third and Fourth Groups, mandatory period of 6 months
Vaccines
The executive decree issued by the Ministry of Health indicates that people traveling to risk areas should be vaccinated to avoid outbreaks in Costa Rica. This applies to Costa Ricans and residents alike.
The countries at risk are:

Africa: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan.

South America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela. Except for the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Caribbean: French Guiana
Minors
The minor needs to have a valid passport and the permission issued by the General Directorate of Migration. It must have the authorization signature of both parents and a copy of the identity card.
In order for the minor to travel alone, the requirements are regulated by the General Directorate of Migration, who grant the travel permit with the prior authorization of the minor’s parents. Once with the Migration permit, the adult will hand over the minor to someone form the airline staff, who will be in charge of the custody of the minor until delivering it to the person in charge in the destination country.
Traveling With Pets
At the time of arriving at the airport, you must bring a certification issued by a veterinarian that includes the name, breed, specifications in order to confirm that the animal is up to date with the vaccinations and health condition. That certificate along with the pet must be presented at the corresponding counter of your flight to authenticate if the animal complies with the guidelines established by the airline. If so, the airline contacts SENASA to proceed with the validation seal. The passenger must pay the departure tax of the animal.

Airport Parking
So far the parking service is free. However, discretion is suggested when leaving your belongings inside the vehicle, although the area is supervised with surveillance cameras, it is still a public access area.
Rejections & Deportations
Rejection
Rejection is an action by which the migration authority denies a foreigner the entry into the national territory and orders the immediate transfer to the country of origin or provenance, or to a third country that admits it. Rejection can occur when the foreign person:

Does not comply with the income requirements required by law.

Present an impediment to entering the country.
-
Be surprised trying to evade immigration control or entering a place not enabled.
Deportation
Deportation is an act ordered by the Migration General Director through which a foreign person is placed outside the national territory. This action is carried out when the foreign person:

Has entered clandestinely into the country or without complying with the rules of entry and permanence.
-
Has obtained entry and / or stay in the country through declarations or the presentation of false or altered visas or documents.
-
Has remained in the country even after the authorized period expires.
-
You have been invited to leave the country and did not do so within the stipulated period. The foreign person who is deported will not be able to reenter the country for a period of five years, except for the exceptions authorized by the Migration General Director Office.
Arriving To Costa Rica

While in the plane, you will receive the customs procedure form. This must be completed.

Follow the signs towards the migration area.

A migration officer will review your passport and give you the authorization to enter Costa Rica.

After the migration checkpoint, there is the Baggage claim area. Each carousel has a screen that indicates the corresponding flight number.

In the baggage claim area you will find the counters for car rentals.

Going through the customs control your luggage and the declaration form will be checked.

Upon leaving the lobby you will find an offer of services such as mobile sim cards, private transportation, shops, money exchange.
Departing Costa Rica

International flights: It is recommended to arrive three hours before the time indicated for the departure.

Domestic flights: It is recommended to arrive 1 hour before the time indicated for the departure.

Make sure you have a valid passport.

Verify that the departure tax is already included in the price of the ticket. Otherwise, you can pay the corresponding US, 00 at the Banco Crédito Agrícola de Cartago office located at the lobby.

Each airline has specific guidelines regarding dimensions, allowable weights and amount of luggage per passenger. Verify directly with your airline for further assistance regarding your concern.

Once your flight is checked, you will go to the departure migration inspection counter. There you will present your passport and boarding pass.

At the security checkpoint you will be asked to scan the carry-on baggage. When going through the inspection, you should remove any metallic items, coins, keys, watches and electronic devices that you carry with you. These will be scanned through x-ray machine, as well as the passenger.

After passing the security filters, you can locate the corresponding boarding room assigned to your flight.

Customs
Any person who carries equal or greater than $10,000 in cash or its equivalent in another currency or in articles must declare it to the customs officer. Otherwise, your belongings will be confiscated according to the 8204-law article # 35.
Where should I go if I get items confiscated other than luggage?
If the retention is made at the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, the officer will inform you in which Customs Warehouse the goods will be transferred. To withdraw it, the interested party must present the voucher at the time of the retention and pay the corresponding taxes. Art. 377 RLGA.
Safety Tips
Use only authorized transportation services. Passengers can identify them because they are wearing credentials and uniforms of the company.
Make your reservation in advanced in order to have someone waiting for you upon your arrival.
Get the car rent reservation at the counters inside the terminal.
The parking area is currently public and free. It is recommended to be cautious and do not leave valuables items inside the car. Although the area is supervised with surveillance cameras, it is still a public access area.
Since 2012, smoke-free places were established in public areas according to the Law 9028. Therefore, there are no smoking rooms or smoking public areas allowed around the terminal. It is recommended that visitors respect the established law regulations.
By security protocol, passengers companions are asked to wait for them Outside The Terminal On The waiting Area unless they receive authorization from security personnel.
How do I get there?
Liberia International Airport is located 12 km west from Liberia downtown, on highway 21.
If you’re using public transportation, the urban bus of Pulmitan, route Liberia-Aeropuerto-Liberia goes every half hour starting at 5:00 am. The approximate price is $1
Another option is Transportes La Pampa route Liberia-Nicoya-Liberia.
The bus to Coco beach does not enter the terminal, so you must take a bus that leaves you on the main road 21 and take the other bus that will take you to your destination.
